Born on Third Base Blog Post #1
I found Born on Third Base enjoyable and interesting to read because of how it explores the major issue of inequality in our society. I love Chapter 2 and how it talks about the importance of having empathy within our society for those who are impacted by the consequences of social inequality. I was reminded by how I should always have a sense of gratitude because "if you live in the United States, you are probably in the top 5 or 10 percent globally". I was inspired by how it says that individuals with more economic resources have significant power to make a change and to help resolve the issue of social inequality. As I am pursuing a career in the entertainment industry, I hope I can help produce movies that will talk about issues like this and motivate change.
I am liberal and I believe that everyone has to pay taxes. Chapter 4 caught my attention when it talked about the time that Collins was a guest speaker on a conservative radio talk show. I don't believe that the rich should pay taxes as everyone else does and their hard work ethic does not give them an excuse to not contribute back to society. I am passionate about this subject because my father came from a poor background and as he did work hard to become a successful Disney digital executive producer, he did not get there by himself. My father was able to attain his dreams because of both his work ethic and opportunities he was given through the government which prepared him for his future position. He had teachers in the public school system that inspired him and financial aid that made it possible for him to get a bachelor's degree. I believe that taxes are a duty for all of us in order to benefit the future generation and those who have a diligent work ethic but not as many resources.
